Summer Dance Party 2011
@ The Mercury Cafe
with Sway Machinery and Pink Hawks
joined by DJ’s Shrimple, Reginold and El Binini
Mercury Cafe hosts a Summer Dance Party with performances by New York’s Sway Machinery and local favorite Pink Hawks at 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 27. Tickets $10 at the door. The Mercury Cafe, 2199 California Street, Denver 80205.
The Sway Machinery’s combination of rhythmic power and potent folklore takes no prisoners. And indeed, the historical tradition of Cantorial music, which is the focus of the band's work, is very much a lost world. The band boasts an unusually accomplished line-up of musicians, featuring guitarist Jeremiah Lockwood of Balkan Beat Box, son of composer Larry Lockwood and the grandson of the legendary Cantor Jacob Konigsberg, drummer John Bollinger of Barbez, bass saxophonist Colin Stetson of Arcade Fire and Tom Waits' band, and the trumpet and tenor sax horn section of the band Antibalas, Jordan McLean and Stuart Bogie. The powerful combination of musical personalities yields an unassailable force of excitement. www.swaymachinery.com
The Pink Hawks have evolved from an entirely free-form performance art group, to the more focused psychedelic Nigerian Funk band of today. Currently led by the experienced improvisationalist Yuzo Nieto, Pink Hawks is not a group to be confined by expectations--no show is ever the same. Formally trained in operatic singing and jazz saxophone, Nieto's musical inclinations led him beyond the roots of his youth to explore other forms of artistic expression both traditional and visceral. As Jon Solomon of the Westword writes, "Nieto not only likes to fill your ears with some intriguing ear candy, he’ll give you something to watch." In addition, Pink Hawks have incorporated the African drum stylings of Cleo Parker Robinson’s African dance rhythm section, as well as a solid cast of horn players, bassists, and guitarists. Bring your dancing shoes, and come join Pink Hawks as they set the floor on fire.www.myspace.com/pinkhawks
The evening includes DJ Shrimple and DJ Reginold, of Soulfax fame, and DJ El Binini of KGNU spinning inspired world dance music. Food will be served upstairs; John Long Farm's BBQ pulled Pork, BBQ Tofu and organic sides.
