Farid Ayaz and Abu Mohammed, hailing from Pakistan, rank among the most distinguished singers of Qawwali, a stunning music form brought to the West a few years ago by the incomparable Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Qawwali is a Sufi devotional music, known as the 'path of the heart'. It has its origins in ancient Islamic poetry and expresses the intense thoughts and feelings of the great Sufi mystics. The music draws the audience into a transcendental world of chants, at once human and divine. Beginning with a meditative rhythm, the hymns and melodies gradually evolve into an intense and joyful climax where emotions overpower thoughts and there is a feeling of ecstasy all around.
