SubRegatta 2007 in Carmel

Carmel, IN – The 15th Annual SubRegatta will be held this Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th starting at 9 a.m. at the City of Carmel Reflecting Pond near 3rd Ave and City Center Drive . The free event, which is co-sponsored by The SubCommittee and the Indianapolis Admirals, will feature model submarines from 75-100 participants from all over the world competing in an obstacle course and other events for which trophies will be awarded. The models vary in size from one foot to ten feet long and cost anywhere from $500 to thousands of dollars. Some are even capable of launching torpedoes and missiles. Spectators will recognize some of the submarines from films such as 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Hunt for the Red October, The Abyss, and Das Boot. Tents will be set up during the event displaying different boat models and vendors will be present to sell kits and other merchandise.

The SubCommittee, one of the sponsors of this year’s event, is a not-for-profit organization of over 1,000 members worldwide who all share an interest in submarines, primarily the building of models - both display and radio controlled. That interest extends to the history and design of submarines of all nations and eras, the collecting of submarine memorabilia as well as research and reference material about submarines. The SubCommittee also provides specific information on building model submarines (both static-display and radio-controlled) and reviews of model kits and sources of modeling supplies. Members have also worked on major films, building and operating submarines in a special effect role. For more information on the Subcommittee, please visit their website www.subcommittee.com.

The other sponsor of the 15th Annual SubRegatta, the Indianapolis Admirals, is one the oldest remote-control boat clubs in the country. The local club has around fifty members ranging from grade school-aged children to retirees. In addition to sponsoring events, the Indianapolis Admirals also conduct classes and workshops about building model boats. For more information about club membership and other club events, please visit the Indianapolis Admirals website at www.indyadmirals.org or email Chris Campbell at admiralscommander@hotmail.com.
