Street Style and Personal Propaganda: New York, London, and Tokyo February 7, 2006

It?s no secret that clothing, hairstyles, accessories, and other bodily adornments serve as ready markers of a personal or group desire to assert and express themselves to the world at large. In the 20th century, the public dress or ?street style? of groups from Zooties to Hippies, Punks to Goths, Mods to Rockers, and even today?s Hip-Hop crowd have become a source of fashion innovation, exposing these subcultures?for better or worse?to wider audiences and the high-fashion runways. Fashion historian Patricia Mears, cultural historian Tricia Rose, and anthropologist Ted Polehemus, will examine the street styles of New York, London, and Tokyo, and reveal the complex mix of expression and meaning unique to the styles found in each city and on the backs (and fronts) of its denizens.
