VETERANS’ AFFAIR
DENVER, – Stories on Stage honors those who serve and those who wait in “Veterans’ Affairs” on Saturday, November 12 at 1:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in Denver at Su Teatro @ the Denver Civic Theatre, 721 Santa Fe Drive, Denver. Tickets are $ 25 adult, $15 Student and are available by calling 303-494-0523 or online at www.storiesonstage.org. Tickets for groups of 10 or more are $20 per person and LoDough (scholarship) tickets are also available.

The Last Stand by Siobhan Fallon, read by Timothy McCracken
Gold Star by Siobhan Fallon, read by Mare Trevathan
Siobhan Fallon lived at Fort Hood while her husband was deployed to Iraq for two tours of duty. She earned her MFA at the New School in New York City and now lives with her family near the American Embassy inAmman, Jordan. The Last Stand is taken from her first book, You Know When The Men Are Gone, a collection of loosely interconnected short stories dealing with the absence a deployment creates.
Timothy McCracken has performed in theatre, television, and film for nearly 20 years. He has appeared in numerous theatre productions in New York, including the acclaimed revival of The Dining Room (Drama Desk award), as well as the New York Shakespeare Festival, New York Theatre Workshop and many others. He has also performed in regional theaters around the country, including the Denver Center Theatre Company, and will perform at Denver’s Curious Theatre this spring. Television credits include episodes of “Law and Order,” “Delocated” and others. Film credits include Tia and Marco, and Small, Beautifully Moving Parts.
Mare Trevathan is a narrator at Talking Books and a member of Curious Theatre Company where, among other things, she organizes literary arts/live music mash-up events with the Colorado Chamber Players. She is co-creator of "BALLS! A Holiday Spectacular": a rollicking annual variety show (with sock puppets!) that raises funds for Denver non-profits. In addition to her award-winning performances on stage Ms. Trevathan has directed productions of Driving Miss Daisy and Hairspray.
Sudden Money by Ray Wax, from Studs Terkel’s The Good War read by Ben Hammer
In The Good War Studs Terkel presents the good, the bad, and the ugly memories of World War II from a perspective of forty years after the events. No matter how gruesome the memories are, relatively few of the interviewees said they would have been better off without the experience. It was a central and formative experience in their lives. Terkel was a Pulitzer prize-winning author and radio broadcast personality who, late into his life, continued to interview people, work on his books, and make public appearances.
Ben Hammer has had a lengthy and distinguished career acting in Broadway plays, including "The Great Sebastians," "The Tenth Man," "The Deputy," "The Gathering," "The Crucible," "Golda," and "The Gathering." His extensive television career includes The Execution of Private Slovick and The Winds of War along with a recurring part as Judge Herman Mooney on the hit TV show "Law & Order." Hammer has appeared in the filmsThe Last New Yorker, Crazy People, Sleepers, The Jagged Edge, and The Beastmaster.
Speaking of Courage by Tim O'Brien read by Lawrence Hecht
Tim O'Brien often writes about his experiences in the Vietnam War and the impact the war had on the American servicemen who fought there. His writing career was launched in 1973 with the release of If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home, about his war experiences. He received the National Book Award in 1979 for his book Going After Cacciato. His novel In the Lake of the Woods won the James Fenimore Cooper Prize for Best Historical Fiction in 1995.
Lawrence Hecht is currently performing as Mr. Gilmer in To Kill a Mockingbird at the Denver Center where he has also been seen in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The House of the Spirits, Glengarry Glen Ross, The Pillowman and A Skull in Connemara. Regionally he has performed in King Lear (Shakespeare Santa Cruz),How I Learned to Drive (San Diego Rep), Gross Indecency (Theatre on the Square), Hamlet (OregonShakespeare Festival), Sylvia (San Jose Rep); Good, A Lie of the Mind, Night and Day, Buried Child (ACT, San Francisco), My Fair Lady (PCPA), A View from the Bridge (Berkeley Rep) and many others. On film Mr. Hecht has been seen in Wes Craven’s Scream.
