DENVER, CO – Stories on Stage presents “Far Away from Home” as part of their Out of the Box series, featuring Jonathan Nichols, Shishir Kurup and Rachel Fowler. Show times are 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.on Saturday, March 19 at Su Teatro's Denver Civic Theatre. All of us are originally born into one sort of place or kind of family. But the quest for that ephemeral, essential spot known as Home may well entail searches that reach over years and decades and span countries and continents. It’s a place, ultimately, that’s found in the heart.
The Lower River by Paul Theroux, read by Jonathan Nichols
Paul Theroux, an American travel writer and novelist, is best known for his novel The Mosquito Coast(1982) which won the James Tait Black Award and the Yorkshire Post Best Novel of the Year Award.Mosquito Coast was later (1986) made into a movie starring Harrison Ford and directed by Peter Weir. A prolific writer, Theroux has also published collections of short stories, essays and articles that mirrored some of his travel adventures.
Jonathan Nichols trained at the Juilliard School and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. His theatrical work includes Coconut Grove Playhouse & South Coast Repertory: Anna and the Tropics; Seattle Repertory: Beauty of the Father (World Premier); Lincoln Center Theater: Measure for Measure; Old Globe Theater: La Fiaca, Necessities, Hamlet, As You Like It. He was seen in the films Pay it Forward and Desert Saints and television appearances that include
Without a Trace, The West Wing, Friends, Judging Amy, NYPD Blue, Becker .
The Third and Final Continent by Jhumpa Lahiri, read by Shishir Kurup
Jhumpa Lahiri is an Indian American author whose debut short story collection, Interpreter of Maladies(1999), won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Her first novel, The Namesake (2003), was adapted into the popular film of the same name. She was born Nilanjana Sudeshna, which she says are both "good names," but goes by her nick-name Jhumpa. Lahiri is a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, appointed by U.S. President Barack Obama.
Shishir Kurup is an actor-writer-director-composer born in Bombay, India, and raised in Mombasa, Kenya, and the United States. Mr. Kurup's adaptation of Merchant on Venice, which deals with Hindu/Muslim tensions, won the California Arts Council award. He has been seen on TV in the seriesSurface and Heroes; and has made appearances in Numbers, Lost, Sleeper Cell, Monk, Six Feet Under, M.D.s, The West Wing, among others. Mr. Kurup was one of only six people nationwide to receive the TIME (Time for Inspiration, Motivation and Exploration) Grant from the Audrey Skirball Foundation in recognition of his body of work.
Foster by Claire Keegan, read by Rachel Fowler
Claire Keegan is an Irish short stories writer from County Wicklow. Her first collection of short stories was Antarctica (1999) followed by Walk the Blue Fields (2007). Her new short story Foster was published in Sept 2010. She has won the William Trevor Prize, the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, the Olive Cook Award and the Davy Byrnes Irish Writing Award 2009. Keegan was twice the recipient of the Francis MacManus Award.
Rachel Fowler is a well known actor in Denver, CO whose New York credits include Treason, The Daughter-In-Law, The Triangle Factory Fire Project, The Pagans and Cloud Nine along with many regional credits. Locally, she is currently appearing at the Arvada Center in The Lion in Winter. Rachel was awarded the 2009 Denver Post Ovation Award, Best Actress, for her performance in Curious Theatre’s Rabbit Hole. Denver Center Theatre Company performances include Well, All My Sons (2005Denver Post Ovation Award, Best Supporting Actress) The Miracle Worker and Measure for Measure. Her films include Watch Over Me, Last Call and Wild America.
Celebrating their 10th Season, Stories on Stage combines literature with theater to bring short stories to life and features some of America's best actors.
