Victorians are being encouraged to make their steps count on Friday 16 November during Steps for Independence. Each day Victorians take thousands of steps, and they take almost every one of them for granted. But at 12 noon on November 16, Victorians will step out for the 12,000 Australians who cannot walk due to a spinal cord injury.
Launched by Independence Australia for the first time in 2012, Steps for Independence aims to promote the prevention of spinal cord injury and raise money for services that support people living with a spinal cord injury to regain their independence.
In 2012, all funds raised will support Independence Australia’s Psychology and Counselling service, which helps individuals and families overcome the trauma of a spinal cord injury.
Steps for Independence is held as part of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week (SCIAW), from 12 – 18 November 2012. Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week is a national campaign which aims to raise awareness of the devastating impact that a serious injury such as a spinal cord injury can have on the lives of the individual and family.
