– A new exhibit, Stephen A. Douglas: From the Shadow of Lincoln opens Saturday, Sept. 24 in the John M. Antaramian Gallery at the Civil War Museum. This exhibit uses items from private collector George Buss to showcase Lincoln's political rival and show how, during Douglas' lifetime, he was the more popular of the two men. Douglas, a powerful politician and controversial legislator, is depicted through paintings, lithographs, sculptures, personal artifacts, campaign posters and cartoons. The exhibit will be on display through March 20, 2012.

On Saturday, Oct. 1, Buss will present a talk at 1 p.m., “In the Shadow of a Giant” about his research on Douglas. Buss will re-examine Douglas's image, including unplanned events which lead to his collection. He will answer questions from the audience during this free program sponsored by the Milwaukee Civil War Roundtable and Iron Brigade Association.
A public reception will follow the presentation from 2-4 p.m.
