(Ben Niles, US 2007, 81 min., Digital Projection)
One of the most popular films in Dryden Theatre history returns with the “star” of the film in person. Based on a series of New York Times articles, this surprisingly fascinating new documentary attempts to answer the question: “How does a piano get to Carnegie Hall?” Director Niles delves into the history of the 150-year-old Steinway Company in Queens, NY, one of the last outposts of handcraftsmanship in a machine-dominated industry, to find out what goes into the making of one concert grand. The sound of the Steinway is demonstrated by, among others, Harry Connick Jr., Hélène Grimaud, Kenny Barron, and Marcus Roberts. The screening will be preceded by a demonstration on the actual piano you’ll see being made in Note by Note!
