The fourth annual Stand Together conference presents some of America's most acclaimed child development and child care specialists. Their presentations will provide practical strategies and techniques to help some of our most vulnerable children and youth.

Troubled Transplants: This full day presentation will address ways of proactively intervening with and supporting foster and adoptive parents in their attempts to reach troubled children. It will describe an approach to parent training and to mental health consultation that maximizes the positive impact of foster and adoptive families and helps reduce the incidence of placement breakdown.
Dr. Rick Delaney is a nationally known American speaker, author and consultant to foster, kinship, and adoptive parents. Dr. Delaney is consultant to the Casey Family Programs and other child care agencies.. Dr. Delaney is a father and step father and resides in Ft. Collins, Colorado.

This comprehensive workshop will cover screening and diagnosis, the differences between behaviours caused by structurally different brains and negative environments, interventions and strategies, the strengths and weaknesses of people who are are alcohol exposed.
Julie Gelo is a foster parent with Ina Maka, a foster care agency with United Indians of All tribes Foundation. Eight of Julie's children have been diagnosed with FASD. Julie is active as a national advocate for people with FASD.

" Boys Learn Different than Girls"

Based on the work of Dr. Michael Gurian and his book "Boys and Girls Learn Differently" the objectives of this presentation are:
1.) Learn how boys and girls minds are different 2.) Examine best practice for meeting the needs of both boys and girls 3) Introduce the main findings on brain development, age related. 4.) Introduce the implication of new research in attachment and brain-based differences on how we deal with boys and girls.
Bruce Ivany has been an educator for the past 33 years teaching Grade 4-12, as an elementary teacher and secondary counsellor, Junior High School, and for the past 9 years as Assistant Superindentant for the Abbotsford School District. He is a certified trainer with the Gurian Institute and has conducted over 85 workshops for school districts, and parents on the topic of How Boys Learn Differently Than Girls.

AFABC is a non-profit organization that provides province-wide support services and information to people who are beginning to think about adoption, people who have decided to adopt, and those who have already had a child or children join their family. AFABC also plays a significant role in promoting awareness of the thousands of BC children in the care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development, who are waiting for a family.
AFABC wasstarted around a kitchen table in 1977 by a small group of adoptive parents who needed to share ideas, information, and support.
