The Whole Backstage Theatre in Guntersville, Alabama is offering a wide variety of opportunities this spring. One of these events is a stage make-up class which will be held in two parts. These classes, both a beginner’s and advanced class will be taught by experienced theatrical make-up artist, Mitch Resler. Resler said he has been going back and forth on the idea for some time. After an experience this summer to work hands on with a film crew, he decided it was time to “go for it”. The Whole Backstage has never offered such an opportunity, and while the theatre is celebrating its 40th Anniversary Season, there could never be a better time!
The beginner’s class will be held Saturday March 28th from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and will teach basic base application, shadowing and highlighting, and aging. The cost is $30 and the participant will be allowed to keep the make-up kit which is included in the class fee. The advanced class will be held Saturday April 4th from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. and will cover specialized character make-up tools such as sculpting clay and latex. This class will also introduce techniques to change the shape of facial features, make-up for stage cuts, bruises, and burns, create animal faces, and use appliances to the face to change physical shape. The advanced class is $60 and the participant will be allowed to keep the make-up kit which is included in the class fee. Registration and fees are due by February 27th. Both classes will be held in the newly renovated dressing room of the Whole Backstage Theatre.
Resler has been with the Whole Backstage Theatre since the summer of 1994. He majored in Theatre at the University of Montevallo where he received an Irene Ryan Award nomination for his makeup design for “Iphigenia and other Daughters”. He was makeup and hair as well as an extra for the documentary Operation Valkerie: The Stauffenburg Plot to Kill Hitler. Other theatre credits include Director for “12 Angry Jurors”, Assistant Director for “Odd Couple”, “Man for All Seasons”, and “Dearly Departed”, and most recently was the Stage Manager for the musical, “Annie”.
