Adam Arenson, assistant professor of History at University of Texas at El Paso and author of The Great Heart of the Republic: St. Louis and the Cultural Civil War, discusses the city's role in the Civil War Era and the Civil War Era’s role in defining St. Louis, a Union city in a slave state, "Gateway to the West" on the border of slavery and freedom. How do these great historical conflicts—slavery and westward expansion—intersect?
