Join Sr. Helen Prejean, Laura Mangani and Mike Farrell in Sacramento March 2nd!
Dear FCL Supporter,
[The Friends Committee on Legislation in California (The Quaker Lobby)] is pleased to join with our valued partners at Death Penalty Focus to sponsor the Second Capitol Awards Banquet in Sacramento on March 2nd. Recent polls confirm that support for the death penalty is declining. California, Maryland and Florida have suspended executions as they look for a "humane" way to carry out an inhumane act. Now more than ever we need to stand together and help others understand that capital punishment is ineffective, does not heal victims' families and targets the poor, people of color and the disenfranchised.
This year's keynote speaker is Sr. Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking and The Death of Innocents. Honorees for their outstanding contributions to abolition include Laura Magnani of the American Friends Service Committee and author of America's First Penitentiary and co-author of Beyond Prisons: A New Interfaith Paradigm for Our Failed Prison System, California State Assembly Member Mark Leno, and Dr. David Thompson, Pastor, Westminster Presbyterian Church. Actor Mike Farrell of Death Penalty Focus will serve as emcee. We will also honor the memory of our dear friend Tommy Clinkenbeard. Tommy led the local chapter of Death Penalty Focus and was instrumental in bringing Sr. Helen to Sacramento for this year's banquet. The banquet will be held:
Friday, March 2nd, at 7:00 p.m.
Radisson Hotel (500 Leisure Lane, Sacramento CA)
A hosted reception for sponsors begins at 5:30 p.m.
The banquet is a fundraiser for FCL and Death Penalty Focus. Seating is limited and we expect another sold-out event; therefore, we encourage you to make your reservation promptly. Friends Meetings and individuals are encouraged to become sponsors. Sponsors are invited to attend the 5:30 p.m. hosted reception with Sr. Helen, Mike Farrell, honorees and community leaders. Sponsors will be listed in the banquet program and receive complimentary dinner tickets as shown in the downloadable order form.
We look forward to seeing you in Sacramento March 2nd!
Sincerely,
Jim Lindburg
Legislative Advocate
