The park is right in the middle of the East River, the city and the river swirl serenely around you - you could throw rocks at the Midtown Skyline. And there's this ruined castle-like 1850's city smallpox hospital [ http://rihs.us/landmarks/renwick-1.jpg ] down there too (legendarily haunted). Take the F train all the way there (there's a "Roosevelt Island" stop), and bring your guitars & blankets & folding chairs & your beverages & your hibachis & charcoal & stuff to grill and whatnot.
