The Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco ushers in the Year of the Tiger with its annual free Spring Festival Celebration, the largest indoor Lunar New Year extravaganza in Chinatown on the same weekend as the Chinese New Year Parade. Exciting performances throughout the weekend include the Chung Ngai Lion Dance Troupe, whose thundering drums and dynamic dancing has been a favorite of the Parade since the 1970s. Also on tap are martial arts presentations by the National Wu Shu Team and others, Chinese folk dance, acrobats and a concert by the acclaimed San Francisco Gu Zheng Music Society.
Kids will love the many hands on activities including puzzles and traditional paper cutting. Prizes await anyone who can solve the Center’s lantern riddles, and all ages will enjoy a chance to have their fortune told along with calligraphy demonstrations and more.
A special exhibition of the exquisite traditional brush paintings of San Francisco artist Master Kan Kwok Fan is also on view. Noted for his ability to capture the beauty of natural landscapes and his masterful handling of ink, water and color, Kan Kwok Fan’s work has garnered international recognition.
