Please join us in watching the spring dance of the woodcock at the Griggstown Native Grassland Preserve on Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 6:30pm until dark. The woodcock is a long billed woodland bird that probes in the soft wet soil and eats its weight in worms in a day. Woodcocks return in the early spring to mate and nest. Males begin calling and performing their amazing aerial courtship display flight when the afternoon shadows are almost gone. You don't want to miss this!
This is the first of the 2009 nature walks in Franklin Township Somerset County. These walks are sponsored by the Franklin Township Open Space Committee and led by New Jersey Audubon Society. No pre-registration is necessary. All walks are free.
Bring binoculars if you have them and preferably wear boots. Be sure to dress appropriately for current weather conditions. For detailed directions to the park, information and updates please visit http://www.franklintwpnj.org/open_space.html .
