Anthropologist and art historian Spencer MacCallum, credited with introducing Mata Ortiz pottery to the world at large, will deliver a free lecture at the Las Cruces Museum of Art on Saturday, Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. It is part of the Contemporary Ceramics of Mata Ortiz exhibit and sale which opens at the Museum on Friday, Dec. 1 and continues through Jan. 20, 2007.
MacCallum discovered three exquisite unsigned ceramic pots in Deming in 1976. His pursuit of their creator led him to Juan Quezada and the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. The friendship of MacCallum and the Mata Ortiz potters has remained strong, and the skilled artistry of Mata Ortiz pottery is today recognized internationally in gallery and museum exhibitions and in public and private collections.
