Founded by the American cellist Frank Dodge in 1988, SPECTRUM CONCERTS BERLIN has become one of Germany’s most significant voices in the world of chamber music.
Reviewers have showered praise on the ensemble for years, both for their live performances at the Philharmonie’s Kammermusiksaal and for their recordings.
The mission of SPECTRUM CONCERTS BERLIN expanded in 2006 with the opening of SPECTRUM CONCERTS BERLIN-USA.Inc., a sister organization, based in New York City, which presents Spectrum’s concerts to New York audiences at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall.

SPECTRUM’s ensemble members are Annette von Hehn, Linus Roth (violins), Hartmut Rohde (viola), Frank Dodge (cello), Lars Wouters van denOudenweijer (clarinet) and Daniel Blumenthal (piano)
SPECTRUM’S interest in the Austrian born composer Ernst Toch has been sustained for over a decade and has contributed enormously to the growing recognition of this unique musical voice both in Berlin and beyond.

ERNST TOCH (1887 - 1964) was a self-taught modernist, who learned music’s fundamentals from Mozart’s string quartets.
Having fought for Austria in WWI, he was able to ground his musical expression on both theory and human experience.
Toch was hugely successful in Germany until 1933, when he left and settled in Southern California, where he had to get used to the radically different music world of the U.S. and Hollywood.
He was successful, but largely unfulfilled composing for the movies. In his last years, Toch composed seven symphonies, the third of which one him a Pulitzer Prize.
