The Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth, in cooperation with the John G. Tower Center for Political Studies, SMU, presents Dr. Leonard Schoppa, Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia. At this luncheon program, Dr. Schoppa will discuss the current governing party in Japan.
The Democratic Party of Japan, born in 1996, defied the odds against new parties. With a landslide victory in 2009, it became the first party since 1955 to push the LDP out of power and win the right to rule alone. Ever since, however, the DPJ has struggled to provide leadership and push through policies needed to cope with the huge challenges facing the nation. How could a party that was skilled enough to defeat the long-ruling LDP be so poor at governing?
The program is financially assisted by the Japan-United States Friendship Commission and the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies.
