Every other month, Spacetaker hosts the Artist SPEAKeasy, during which two artists offer creative presentations about their work in an informal atmosphere followed by a question and answer session where the audience can glean further insight into the artist, the artist's aesthetic and creative process. Artistic exchange & critical dialogue is encouraged! February's Speakeasy features visual artists Nathaniel Donnett and Curtis Gannon.
About Nathaniel Donnett:
Nathaniel lives and works in Houston, Texas. He studied at Texas Southern University. He is a 2011 HAA established individual art grant recipient, 2011 Idea Art Fund recipient, 2010 Artadia Award recipient and 2009 Tiffany Louis Comfort grant nominee. Some of the spaces he’s exhibited are the Armory Show in New York, Exit Art New York, Art Miami, Lawndale Art Center, The National Museum in Lima, Peru, The Modern Museum of Peru, Project Row Houses, Texas Southern University Museum, as well as participated in a musical performance piece choreographed by Donald Byrd titled Bhandra Fever at the Wortham Theater in Houston, Texas. His work is available at Jenkins Johnson gallery in New York, New York. Nathaniel will share insight into his newest project What's The New News, an interactive community based project which seeks to survey the energy, creativity, value, and spirit of the Third Ward community in Houston.
About Curtis Gannon:
Raised in south Texas, Curtis Gannon graduated from The University of Houston with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, while simultaneously working for the Blaffer Gallery and Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. He later received a master’s degree in painting from San Diego State University. Returning to Houston in 2006, Gannon has continued to work in the Houston art community. Gannon’s works have been in numerous exhibits in the U.S., including at the Lawndale Art Center, Sicardi Gallery, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, as well as Marion Gallery in Panama. Curtis's newest work "AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN." is currently on display in Spacetaker's ARC Gallery.
