Lawrence Hatter, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Virginia, will talk on his thesis, 'Sovereign Markets: Commerce, State Formation, and the Division of the Great Lakes Borderland, 1783-1825.' He will explain how the creation of separate domestic markets by federal and imperial state-building projects brought an effective boundary dividing the British Empire from the American Republic into being between 1783 and 1825.
