In reimagining Mozart’s fantastical opera, Cheam Shapiro transforms the exoticism of 18th century Vienna to the mystical splendors of Cambodia’s Angkor. Thirty-two classical dancers, musicians and singers -- resplendent in shimmering costumes and evoking the divine -- chart Pamina Devi’s arduous path toward justice, tolerance and love, mirroring Cambodia’s contemporary struggle to reconcile its ancient past with its tormented recent history.
