Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the greatest living composers, makes a rare U.S. appearance for a four-program festival that showcases her expressive mastery.
Sunday evening features works that display her fascination with percussive sound, her adaptations of ancient musical impulses to new ends, and her portrait of a soul’s journey. The program will feature Gubaidulina pieces, "In the Beginning There Was Rhythm" (1984) for 7 percussionists, "Duo Sonata for 2 Bassoons" (1977), "Quarternion" 1996, for cello quartet, and "Dancer on a Tightrope" (1993), violin and string piano.
