Sonny Rollins, last of the saxophone giants

Seventy-six year old saxophonist, Sonny Rollins, one of the last giants of jazz, is playing a unique concert here in our country. He made his first recording in 1949, but today he is still as playful as a puppy. In the fifties his talent was peerless.
His Saxophone Colossus is one of the all time great records in jazz. But later on he added a few other masterpieces, such as A Night at the Village Vanguard. In those days he played with many of the big names in jazz: from Miles Davis to Thelonious Monk and Max Roach.
His name deserves a place beside John Coltrane, that other great saxophonist. Rollins has been a high-profile jazz musician for more than half a century. His mastery of the sax and his astonishing improvisations have had a massive influence on jazz.
