Films and videos by James Schnieder/Violet, Josh Bonnetta, Thorsten
Fleisch. James Schnieder will be present for Q&A.

The video and film works presented on this evening employ the
principles of field recordings, found materials, and granular
synthesis to visual media and their accompanying sound tracks.

By Grace
US, 2007, 3 min., 35mm, Director: Joshua Bonnetta
A small rumination on loss, memory and home. Made by hand-direct
animation using photogram, painted chemistries, hand processing and
step printing. Accompanying sound created with contact mic'ed flowers,
old family cassettes and processed field recordings.

Energie!
Germany, 2007, 5 min., full HD video
From a technical point of view, a TV/video screen comes alive by a
controlled beam of electrons in the cathode ray tube. For Energie!, an
uncontrolled high voltage discharge of 30,000 volts exposed
photographic paper, which was then rearranged.

The End of the Light Age
US, 2007, 70 min., 16mm, Director: James Schneider
Filmed parallel to his science-fiction feature 1,2,3, Whiteout,
Schneider's The End of the Light Age is an experimental tone poem for
darkness set in an old fashioned kind of future. This central theme of
the film is based on a thread of development from Nietszche's Thus
Spoke Zarathustra.

Degradation #1, X-Ray: Shroud of Security
US, 2006, 3 min., 16mm, Director: James Schneider, Soundscape: Violet
While the Shroud of Turin is said to be inscribed with the face of
Jesus Christ, the emulsion of this film has absorbed the image of a
quite different contemporary figure, omnipresent and dissimulated. One
hundred feet of un-shot 16mm film was cut into 6 equal parts and
subjected to varying amounts of radiation.

Degradation #2, X-Ray: Government Radiation
US, 2007, 3 min., 16 mm, Director: James Schneider, Soundscape: Violet
For Government Radiation, Schneider first filmed the US Capitol. Then,
using a process similar to Shroud of Security, the 16mm film reel was
cut into 6 equal parts and passed through Government security x-ray
machines in Washington, DC 0, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 128 times. The
result is a gradual effacing of the image.
