Somerville Open Studios is the largest open studios in New England and the second largest in the U.S. Over 300 artists will be showing at more than 100 locations throughout the city at this uniquely pedestrian-friendly event. During this free citywide showcase for the arts, mid-career and emerging artists working across a broad spectrum of fine art styles and craft media – including painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, furniture and ceramics – will exhibit and sell their work to the public. Continuing what has become both an enjoyable community-building event for artists and an increasingly popular means of previewing work for art enthusiasts, we have again accepted The Somerville Museum’s generous offer to host the Artists’ Choice Exhibit run in connection with SOS each year. All registered participants of SOS are invited to submit a piece of their choosing for inclusion in the show. Whether you choose to enter artwork or not, come and renew old art connections or make new ones at the opening on Thursday April 16, 6 - 9 pm.
SOS: overall weekend experience:
Somerville Open Studios (SOS) has come a long way from presenting 80+ artists in 1999. However, SOS continues to be dedicated to maintaining that initial local, grass-roots feel, providing visitors with the opportunity to view art made within the community, to interact with local artists, and to have access to artists’ working spaces, ranging from the dozens of home studios to the large studio and commercial buildings, such as Brickbottom Studios, Central Street Studios, Joy Street Studios, Mad Oyster Studios, Vernon Street Studios, Washington Street Art Center, among others. SOS will have artists exhibiting at the Center for Arts at the Armory at 191 Highland Ave in celebration of this new addition to the Somerville arts community.
