Sojourners, Settlers, and New Immigrants: Mexicanos in Oregon October 19, 2008

Speaker: Erlinda Gonzales-Berry, former professor at Oregon State University, presented through the Oregon Chautauqua program of the Oregon Council for the Humanities

The number of Latinos residing in Oregon has increased dramatically in the last decade, leading one scholar to speak of the “browning of Oregon.” This, however, is not a new phenomenon, for there has been a settled-out, Mexican-origin population in Oregon since the 1930s. The speaker will discuss the history of migration and the complex issues concerning borders in this presentation. She will highlight the Mexicans’ sustained practices of community building, struggles for integration, and contributions to the cultural and economic landscape of the state.
