While "social enterprise" is a wide-ranging umbrella term, their goal is universal: individuals with innovative solutions to tackle society’s most pressing social problems by offering new ideas for widespread change. They are role models proving that individuals who channel passion into action can do almost anything.
Dr. Madhav Chavan’s mission is “He wants every Indian to learn to read." In 1994, he founded Pratham, which currently operates in over 400,000 villages and 43 cities throughout India, increasing literacy among poor children. Within the last decade, Pratham has reached over one million children and is a beacon of hope in India, where half the children cannot read or write properly.
Pratham's Read India campaign aims to teach all children in India how to read, write and do arithmetic by 2010. More than 17 million children have already benefited from the campaign. Pratham was the first beneficiary of the partnership between the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation to improve the quality of education in developing countries. Google recently awarded a grant to Pratham's Annual Survey of Education Report, a nation-wide survey of education quality.
