For this showing, we will start with “Cultures of Resistance”. In 2003, on the eve of the Iraq war, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and, as she saw it, heading for self-destruction. After several years, traveling over five continents, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promote change. We will meet poets for peace in Colombia, Iranian graffiti artists, Rwandan women activists and leaders, a Liberian cartonnist, a Brazilian favela photographer, Lebanon’s refugee filmmakers, political pranksters the Yes Men, indigenous activists in the Amazon, Israeli dissidents, Palestinian hip-hop artists, and Burmese monks of the Saffron Revolution. Also to be screened is “One Minute”, the shortest film about our longest war. Q&A follows each film.
