Vintage Theatre presents “Six Degrees of Separation”

Two socialites find their view of the world changed when a young man takes advantage of their preconceptions in “Six Degrees of Separation” presented by Vintage Theatre Productions March 2 to April 1 at Vintage Theatre, 2119 E. 17th Ave. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 ($20 advance) on Fridays and Saturdays; $21 ($18 advance) on Sundays. Flan and Ouisa Kittredge are a married couple who have built highly successful careers as art dealers catering to Manhattan’s upper crust. One evening a young black man named Paul appears at their door claiming to be a close friend of their children, and that he’s just been mugged. Flan and Ouisa invite him in, and they are immediately taken by Paul’s intelligence and charm; he offers to prepare dinner, regales them with stories about his father, and ends up spending the night at their apartment. However, the next morning Flan and Ouisa discover that they’ve been had; Paul is actually a con artist from the streets who has been pulling the wool over the eyes of many of their friends — and his actions are beginning to have serious consequences.

The outstanding cast includes Theo Wilson (Paul), Josh Hartwell (Flan), Lisa DeCaro (Ouisa), Cindy Laudadio Hill (Kitty), Charles Wingerter (Larkin), Sonia Justl (Elizabeth), Stephen Swofford (Rick), David Blumenstock (Dr. Fein), Matt Sheahan (Geoffrey), Jose Zuniga (Trent), Joe LaFollette (Woody), Caitlin Tomlinson (Tess), Zachary Page (Ben), Loren Cogswell (Doug), Erik Siegling (The Hustler), Addison Parker (Doorman/Policeman) and Rich Beall as the Detective.

Six Degrees of Separation won a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award in 1991 and the 1993 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play.

John Guare is best known as the author of The House of Blue Leaves, Six Degrees of Separation, and Landscape of the Body. His style, which mixes comic invention with an acute sense of the failure of human relations and aspirations, is at once cruel and deeply compassionate.
