Six fictional characters appear mysteriously in the middle of a theatre rehearsal to ask a director and his cast to complete their story. As the story of the characters is revealed, the theatre practitioners begin to wonder if they should ever have agreed to let it be told. Luigi Pirandello won the Noel Prize for literature for his tales that ask such questions as "What is reality and what is illusion?" "Can a play be more real than real-life events?" and "Do we exist outside the fictions that are created for us?"
