About Lake County Wines
Winemakers by the score are re-discovering the bounty of Lake County's agriculturally rich valley, which surrounding ancient Clear Lake and the rocky red volcanic soil around Mt. Konocti, a dormant volcano in the Pacific Rim chain. Lake County produced more grapevines than Napa Valley prior to prohibition when most of the grapes were replaced by walnuts and pears. From less than 100 acres in 1965, vineyard acreage has grown to over 8,800 acres today and is emerging at California most promising new premium wine region. Last year, one winery, Sol Rouge, took "Top Cabernet Sauvignon" honors by winning "Best in Class" for all of North Coast (Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino & Lake Counties) at the California State Fair.
