With sinuous melodies, intricate and powerful rhythms, and daring improvisation, the North Indian art song called "Khyal" (literally, "imagination") is the most prominent form of Indian classical singing. Performance faculty vocalist Warren Senders learned the tradition of raga-singing for many years from master teacher S.G. Devasthali. Accompanied by tabla, harmonium, and tamboura, he will present a selection of beautiful afternoon ragas, ranging from the hypnotically expansive "vilambit" compositions to the lively and compelling rhythmic songs called "tarana." Mr. Senders will also include a selection of romantic, devotional, and folk songs from the Indian traditions.
This concert is part of the Sundays at Tufts - Community Concert Series.
