Pang Lhabsol, celebrated in honour of Khangchendzonga, is organised in Gangtok, Pemayangtse and Rabongla, and incorporates a spectacular warrior dance in which swordsmen leap and prance with intricate steps hailing martial war-cries, says Swaati Chaudhury
The land of Sikkim is simply stunning and offers a respite to tired souls but also serves as a pilgrim destination for many of the devotees. One of the major significant festivals of the Himalayan land of Sikkim has been Pang Lhabsol that has been the dream of the Fourth Chogyal of Sikkim, Chakdor Namgyal. Dedicated to Mt Kanchenjunga, the reigning deity of the mountain state, the festival is held from 13 – 15 September at Rabangla in South Sikkim that marks the congregation of devotees of all faith from all over the state.
In fact Phang means witness. On this day, the guardian deity is portrayed by masked Lama dances as a fiery red-faced deity with a crown of five skulls, riding a snow lion. To lighten the mood of the spectators, jesters called Atchars play antics during the Chaams. The third Chogyal of Sikkim, Chakdor Namgyal is credited for choreographing the Pang-Toed dance performed by monks on this day.
