American per capita incarceration rates are among the world's highest, and not just for men. Seattle journalist Silja J.A. Talvi has interviewed women doing hard time across the country, and in her new book, 'Women Behind Bars: The Crisis of Women in the U.S. Prison System,' she reveals the circumstances of their incarceration, including lack of basic health care, hygiene, nutrition, and protection from violence and exploitation by prison guards and the prison system.
