Known primarily as a portrait painter, Dickinson studied and taught at the Arts Student League in New York. The Museum has assembled a collection of landscapes and figurative paintings that the artist completed during a year he spent central Alabama, while working for his aunt, Charlotte Rogers Thorn, at a school for African-Americans in Calhoun, Alabama.
