Sherway Gardens' Gallery in the Garden: Just Beyond the Fence October 23, 2012

Sherway Gardens’ current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled Just Beyond the Fence features paintings by Diane Gartlan and abstract paintings and constructed creatures” by Sue Archibald. These artists share an expressive use of paint, a masterful use of colour and both create luscious surfaces with imagery that engages the viewer in their vision whether the elements are abstracted from nature or more non-objective. Sue Archibald of Mississauga graduated from the University of Guelph in 1980 specializing in painting, drawing and printmaking. Her studies continued with Grant McEwen School of Design in Alberta, The Toronto School of Art, Haliburton School of Fine Arts, and an ongoing association with The Etobicoke Art Group and Neilson Park Creative Centre. Sue’s main focus has been painting in acrylics, and tackling a combination of acrylic, collage and mark making. Her interest lies in exploring whimsical subjects in a way that reflects what is seen either in the mind’s eye or in nature, but finds much pleasure in being cognizant of paint application and how it is manipulated around the subjects. ‘Constructed creatures’ of found materials is a recent interest. Sue exhibits her work in Southern Ontario through solo and joint exhibitions, juried shows, and now on Facebook. Most recently two of her pieces were included in a group exhibition at the McMichael Canadian Collection in Kleinberg. Awards of recognition include Juror’s Awards, Awards of Excellence, Best Acrylic in show, Randall Family Award and Honorable Mentions. Sue continues to show and sell her paintings. Etobicoke artist, Diane Gartlan, says her inspiration to paint may begin with a shape, a colour, or a reflection. She likes to paint more abstractly, sometimes totally non- objectively and begins the process in her journal while playing with shapes and colour, then applies what speaks to her onto the canvas. Diane’s medium is acrylic, applied with palette knife or brush, using a layering process to create texture and light and she works with the shapes and values and how they relate to each other while forming the composition. Diane has been painting for many years as a member of the Etobicoke Art Group engaged in professional development courses and learning through affiliation with other artists. John Leonard, Steve Rose and many other wonderful teachers have been her mentors. In addition to participating in many local group exhibitions in Neilson Park Creative Centre in Etobicoke and at the Etobicoke Civic Centre Art Gallery, Diane’s work has been exhibited in The Collaborations Project, at the The Chapel Gallery in Bracebridge, and in the Progression exhibition in 2010-2011 touring across Ontario.
