Sherway Gardens' Gallery in the Garden: Interplay - Lee & Millette March 10, 2011

Examining the connection between sculptor and painter, Sherway Gardens (HWY 427 & the QEW) current Gallery in the Garden exhibit entitled Interplay: Lee & Millete demonstrates artists Shuhui Lee and Claude Millette’s common need to understand the interplay of light and dark, motion and stillness and the use of colour, light, line and texture to realize their subject. Etobicoke sculptor, painter and printmaker ShuHui Lee holds a degree in dental surgery from Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan, and worked successfully for years before discovering her interest for the visual arts in 2000. After attaining permanent Canadian resident status, Lee studied fine arts at Central Technical School in Toronto where she graduated with the “Outstanding Student Award”. Sculpture is Lee’s central passion. She has won an Ethel Raicus award given to a student at CTS and in 2009 won third prize in the student show of the Medallion Society of Canada. She has exhibited her work in her native Taiwan and exhibited regularly since 2005 in the Toronto area. More of her work can be viewed at www.wix.com/shuhuilee/art.

“I have tried to capture a hint of movement and energy in the grace and control of the dancer’s leap, in the power dynamic of the athlete striving for the finish line, and in all forms of light display,” states Lee. “But even in this purest and passionate pursuit, I am forced, inevitably, to return again to illusion, where the multiple and complex dynamics of the athlete, the dancer, or the moving light-source, can be represented only as smudges of dry pigment, as metal castings, or as pixels on a flat surface.”

Painter and pastel artist Claude Millette of Oakville is a family therapist who turned to painting after the death of his wife in 2006. Millette learned how to transform a line drawing into colour by watching his wife paint over many years and after her death painting became a way of integrating her into his life while rekindling an old interest. Millette began experimenting with pastels and discovered how the interaction between light and dark gave shape to objects. “Specifically, I try to capture how sunlight paints the forest and trees,’ states Millette. “Darkness is always present lurking in the shadows and defining the shapes under my brush. The visual expression I find in painting symbolizes my discovery that life goes on despite loss. It shows how my life has become about capturing the colour of light – and no longer about escaping the darkness of my night.”
