Shark Hunt! Shark, Skate and Dolphin Fossils Field Trip.
June 21st 2009, 9am-1:30pm, Brownie's Beach, MD
Did you know that scientists have discovered teeth that were once housed in the mouths of 50 foot sharks that weighed up to 100,000 pounds? To celebrate the Year of Science June theme (oceans and water) The Society invites you to attend this exciting fossil hunting workshop. Author, anthropologist and enthusiast, Dr. Ritterbush (aka Dr. Beachcomb) will introduce you to paleontology and teach you how to identify fossilized teeth and bones up to 20 million years old. Discover how to tell the difference between shark, skate, and dolphin teeth. Also, learn the difference between fossilized bones and everyday rocks. During this field trip, you may also be lucky enough to excavate 19th century clay pipes or even colorful carnival beads reputedly washing in from a mid-20th century shipwreck.
Dr. Deacon Ritterbush is known throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Chesapeake Bay region for her beachcombing lectures and workshops. Her recently published book, A Beachcomber's Odyssey, vol. I: Treasures from a Collected Past has just received the gold medal award by Independent Publishers for the "Living Now" Hobby/Collecting Book of 2009. The book also garnered an Honorable Mention for Most Inspirational book of 2009 and was shortlisted for the Da Vinci Eye Medal for Cover of the Year by the Eric Hoffer Society.
