Enjoy new and stimulating ways of understanding the greatest writer of English literature. Really understanding Shakespeare means reading the plays as controversial theatre events about identity, history, politics and belief. Real understanding also means using readable contemporary editions, comparing films and productions, and looking at some of the best and most readable recent commentaries about Shakespeare and the Renaissance. The focus is on three major plays from 1598 1601, the period of Shakespeares maturity and the opening of the Globe Theatre: 'Julius Caesar', 'Hamlet' and 'Twelfth Night'.
