SAN FRANCISCO – The SFMOMA Artists Gallery announced a new show for January 2011. Three Bay Area artists Mirang Wonne, Jenn Shifflet and Kathryn St. Clair present their work together in a group show. The show will be celebrated with a reception for the artists on Thursday, January 13 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
The show includes three Bay Area artists who observe the world around us but interpret it using very different media. Mirang Wonne creates drawings on stainless steel mesh by burning the surface with a torch. The silver colored metal surface, with a colorful acrylic painting just below, bears some resemblance to Asian calligraphy and brush painting created on long scrolls of paper. She favors motifs from nature, focusing on the eternal aspects of nature’s ephemeral instantaneity.
Jenn Shifflet’s work also references Asian art but with a pop art twist. Through her rich and developed color palette and her interest in a very contemporary kind of line, Shifflet’s work is fresh and irresistible. Her paintings are slowly built up of thin transparent glazes, creating deeply saturated color, luminosity and an expanded sense of space. Through this subtle color and shifting light she is able to play with the moments between movement and stillness.
Kathryn St. Clair investigates how light shifts our perception of what surrounds us. Her work plays with patterns and distortions in landscapes, creating a halo of soft diffusion or pockets of ambiguity in something that is otherwise universally familiar. She is adept at spotting idyllic scene’s that are abundant near her home in Marin County.
Representing Northern California artists, the SFMOMA Artists Gallery offers a diverse selection of original artwork for sale and rent.
The SFMOMA Artists Gallery is located in Building A at Fort Mason Center. Gallery hours are 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission to gallery exhibitions is free of charge.
