SFFS Screen presents: Woman on the Beach June 20, 2008

In Woman on the Beach (Haebyonui yoin, South Korea 2006) a lecherous film director stumbles through two love triangles in one of writer/director Hong Sang-Soo’s most entertaining dissection of Korean romantic foibles and the immaturity of Korean men. Kim Joong-Rae (Kim Seung-Woo), heads for a rather forlorn seaside resort to overcome his writer’s block, but finds more inspiration in battling his friend and production designer Won Chang-Wook (Kim Tae-Woo) for the affections of the Chang-wook’s attractive music composer/not-quite-girlfriend Kim Moon-Sook (Go Hyun-Jung). The intelligent, vivacious Moon-Sook is unlike any woman he’s met before, (indeed, she’s unlike any of Hong’s prior female characters), as she ably demonstrates once he turns his attention to another young woman staying at the beach.
