Sewing Workshop at Pottsgrove Manor January 12, 2013

On Saturday, January 12, 2013 and Sunday, January 13, 2013 from 10:00am to 4:00pm, Pottsgrove Manor will host a workshop on historic sewing techniques with “Shifts and Shirts: The Most Basic of Foundations.”

Seamstress Wendy Moyer of Historically Sew will teach a two-day class on making shirts and shifts, the unsung heroes of a proper colonial wardrobe. Participants will learn how to draft their own shift or shirt pattern and will have a mostly completed garment by the end of the weekend (with homework on Saturday evening). Some experience in hand sewing and the construction of garments is required for this workshop. Participants may bring a sewing machine; an iron and board will be provided. The workshop will take place on-site in the Miller’s House, which is located adjacent to the mansion.

To allow personalized instruction, the class size is limited to six people, and registration is required by January 4, 2013. This workshop is open to participants ages 15 and up. There is a fee of $80 per person for the weekend, which includes an info packet, personalized pattern, and snacks; fabric and notions are not included. A materials and notions list will be provided upon registration. Participants should bring a sack lunch for each day. In case of inclement weather, the workshop will be held on January 26-27, 2013.

Pottsgrove Manor, home of John Potts, colonial ironmaster and founder of Pottstown, is located at 100 West King Street near the intersection of King Street and Route 100, just off Route 422, in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Pottsgrove Manor is operated by Montgomery County under the direction of the Parks and Heritage Services Division of the Assets and Infrastructure Department.

Regular museum hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00am to 4:00pm and Sunday, 1:00pm to 4:00pm. Tours are given on the hour. The last tour of the day begins as 3:00pm.
