Serbis: A Night of Film from the Filipino Diaspora October 2, 2011

In conjunction with the Carlos Villa Exhibition "Manongs, Some Doors and a Bouquet of Crates," Colectivo Cinema Errante & MCCLA present: Cinema from the Filipino diaspora.

"Serbis" (Brillante Mendoza, Philippines, 2008) 90 mins
The film is set in an enormous, dilapidated movie theater that doubles as a home and office for the Pineda family. Once upon a time, the theater was the mark of glamour in the city of Angeles. Now, it runs porn double bills and serves as a meeting ground for hustlers of every conceivable persuasion. Director Brillante Mendoza-"Kinatay" (2009), "Lola" (2009)-captures the sordid atmosphere of the theater, while enveloping the viewer in a maelstrom of sound, noise and continuous motion.

"Ritual" (Carlos Villa, USA, 1980) 14 mins
A video slideshow of a mesmerizing performance by Carlos Villa at The Farm in the Mission district. He melds African cosmogony with T'ai Chi movements and Western action painting.

"Super Flip" (Celine Parrenas, USA, 1997) 30 mins
A short experimental narrative which explores the lives of young Pilipina and Pilipino Americans in San Francisco.
