"Serbis" (Brillante Mendoza, Philippines, 2008) 90 mins
The film is set in an enormous, dilapidated movie theater that doubles as a home and office for the Pineda family. Once upon a time, the theater was the mark of glamour in the city of Angeles. Now, it runs porn double bills and serves as a meeting ground for hustlers of every conceivable persuasion. Director Brillante Mendoza-"Kinatay" (2009), "Lola" (2009)-captures the sordid atmosphere of the theater, while enveloping the viewer in a maelstrom of sound, noise and continuous motion.
