The sun is setting in Venice Beach, Dianne Neuman stands in the center of VOCA Art Gallery, smiling with anticipation. She is preparing the gallery for the next show, “Venice Beach Series: It’s Not All About Me” on Saturday, September 25th at 5:00 pm. The sunlight streams across her face as it magnificently lights up the vibrant abstract works of art that surround her. It has been quite a journey for Dianne Neuman and VOCA Art Gallery. At ten months in, the success of VOCA Art Gallery has overwhelmingly surpassed all expectations. Neuman excitedly admits, “It’s like the gallery has a mind of its own, somehow I was being led to this place. When I first opened VOCA Art Gallery, I did not know what it was about, but I knew it was not about me. I chose to just trust, Wow, this has been quite a journey. It is being revealed to me on a need to know basis as we go along.”
Neuman recounts the story of how and why she decided to start an Art Gallery on the very chaotic Venice Beach Boardwalk. “My husband, Ronnie and I were visiting my son Zack, who was producing a Rap music Video on Venice Beach. I was amazed by the amount of incredible artistic talent here. I have a small art gallery in Sayulita, Mexico, so I found myself looking at all the art around me and thinking, that painting would be great for the gallery, and that one too. Then I realized how unbelievably connected I was starting to feel to Venice and its thriving artist community. As I walked back from the beach, exhilarated from watching the sunset, fantasying about opening a new gallery in Venice, I stumbled upon a flat, unattractive building with a sign in the window, For Lease. Whoa…I say, is the Universe telling me something? Here, here take this, a gift. Whoa, I say to myself, should I do it? I turn to Ronnie and say should I do it? And he looks at me and then thinks for a second and says, Yes. That is Magic alone! Ronnie is way more conservative than me, and he said, Yes.”
The rest is history, expecting 50 or so people at the first opening, Dianne was flabbergasted by the over 500 people that showed up. Local Venice residents continue to thank her for being there, for bringing VOCA to Venice and creating a safe haven for artists to show their work. It was truly a wonderful turn of events.
VOCA Art Gallery and Dianne Neuman are proud to present “Seven Seas” by the renowned sculptor, Bryan Tedrick. Known for his work, Portal of Evolution at Burning Man, Tedrick was featured in the New York Times and his work has received acclaimed reviews as well as earning several public commissions.
In this upcoming exhibit, Tedrick uses steel objects (scraps) to create several kinetic fishlike creatures. The “Seven Seas” exhibit is absolutely breathtaking. As always, Bryan worked without sketches, trusting himself to respond to the materials on hand and the dictates of balance. A love of nature dominates his visual vocabulary and the figure, animals, and plant-forms come to life under his hand.
In addition to the Seven Seas exhibit, Dianne Neuman will be exhibiting her own work in the show entitled “Venice Beach Series: It’s Not All About Me.” The exhibition runs through Oct 24th. For more info, see website, www.vocaartgallery.com
