Sundays: January 9, February 6, March 27, and April 10 / 1:00-2:30 pm - - Sign up for one or more of these winter explorations. Each walk will begin with a short introduction indoors, and then we'll go outside for a walk. General topics for each walk are listed below, but we will stop and investigate anything that crosses our path. - - For the Birds: January 9 - Come meet some of the birds that live in our area all winter long. After our walk, we'll make some simple feeders for the feathered friends in your backyard. Bring some edibles such as nuts (unsalted, preferably raw), dried fruit, cranberries, popcorn, or sunflower seeds, and we'll supply the other materials. Take home a ready-to-eat bird treat and some gourmet recipes to try. - - Red Fox and Friends: February 6 - The red fox is a clever and attractive mammal that is active during winter, stalking rabbits, mice, meadow voles, and birds. We will read Fox's Dream by Keizabur Tejima. Then we will wander along the trails to look for tracks or signs left by foxes and other mammals. Perhaps we will be lucky enough to track the red fox back to its den. - - Where Have all the Insects Gone? March 27 - During the warmer months of the year, we see insects all around us. But don't be fooled--even in March insects are still with us in one form or another. Become an insect detective and join us for a few "buggy" activities inside, and then we will take a walk to search for hibernating and even some active insects. - - Trees Do Amazing Things: April 10 - Why are some trees green all year round? Did you know that trees have birthday candles and record their own autobiography? On this walk, we will discover the secret lives of trees and learn to identify some common species. Registration is required. Call 978-887-9264 for details. See http://www.massaudubon.org/catalog/listing.php?program_code=1275-IP11SP1 for more information.
