Alternative comics from around the country answered an open call for entries and submitted tapes to be considered for The Andy Award, the New York Comedy Festival's only alternative comedy event, created by George Shapiro and the family of the late Andy Kaufman.
Performers whose submissions were deemed to break the barriers of conventional stand-up comedy - evoking emotions from agitation to enlightenment, sadness to elation, laughter to embarrassment like Andy did - were chosen to compete in the semi-finals on MONDAY NOVEMBER 8th at The Marquee, an event produced by PSNBC.
Finalists will compete at Caroline's on Broadway on THURSDAY NOVEMBER 11th, performing for a high-profile panel of judges to see who among them most closely reflects the originality, humor and courage of the late comedian.
The winner will be awarded $7,500 cash (donated by Andy Kaufman's family), a trophy, and a spot on Comedy Central's Premium Blend!
The Andy Award is the only downtown, alternative comedy event in the high-profile New York Comedy Festival (November 9th thru November 13th at various venues - check out www.nycomedyfestival.com for details). The rest of the events feature well-known, established acts.
It's also the only open event in the festival geared toward discovering and supporting new, fresh talent. PSNBC jumped at the chance to be involved with this cool contest, since our mission is to nurture and develop new and alternative comedy voices in New York.
PSNBC hosts a weekly show at The Marquee every Tuesday night, featuring downtown, alternative writers and comedians.
