The Semaphore Repertory Dance Company, Carleton College?s student dance company directed by Mary Easter, the Rae Schupack Nathan Professor of Dance and the Performing Arts, and Jane Shockley, adjunct instructor in dance, will perform on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4 and 5, at 8 p.m. in the Carleton College Arena Theater. The event is free and open to the public.
The program will feature premieres of works from two guest choreographers, Mathew Janczewski and Laurie Van Wieren. Janczewski is the leader of Arena Dances by Mathew Janczewski, a Minneapolis-based dance company in its sixth season that seeks innovative types of movement. Van Wieren, also of Minneapolis, will present her new solo titled ?Anthony.? In addition, Easter will perform her solo work titled ?I Grew Up,? and Semaphore will present works by senior Phil Chan of Berkeley, Calif., senior Betsy Sylvester of Fargo, N.D., and junior Cayce Hill of Claremont, Calif.
Semaphore is an audition-only group that provides advanced dance students opportunities to develop as performers in professional level dances. The group gives an annual concert, performs in the Twin Cities and conducts exchanges with other college groups, including participation in the American College Dance Festival.
Easter has presented her dance work nationally for more than 25 years. She received her bachelor?s degree in music and French from Sarah Lawrence College and studied at the Eastman School of Music. Easter has received a Bush Artist Fellowship in Choreography, a Minnesota Dance Alliance McKnight Fellowship, a Diverse Visions Video Award from Intermedia Arts and a McKnight Artist Fellowship for Interdisciplinary Artists.
