Photojournalists define the contours of our understanding and collective memory of war. Name a conflict and a photographic image comes immediately to mind. WWII: the flag-raising at Iwo Jima. Vietnam: a burned, naked girl running down the street. Iraq: humiliated prisoners at Abu Ghraib.
Yet the public hears very little from the photographers themselves. Featuring interviews with (and photographs by) over twenty of the world’s top photojournalists, this film focuses on the relationship they have with their work - a relationship that is passionate, profound and often deeply conflicted.
This documentary is unprecedented in both the range of its interviewees, and the candour with which they speak. Nowhere are the payoffs and pitfalls of journalism more concentrated and accelerated than in the lives and work of photojournalists.
