In conjunction with Joe Shea's Haley Collective, Scion presents Travel & Document at its 4,500 square foot Installation L.A. Gallery. This show is an exploration and account of life's travels, both literal and figurative – where it takes you and how it affects you particularly in relation to the way you think and the way you create. The collection reflects upon the notion of working in new, different and unfamiliar environments. The six artists in the collective hail from diverse geographical backgrounds and each present their interpretation of life and the creative process - both in the familiar sanctuary of the studio as well as on the road. The works are presented in various mediums including painting, photography, sculpture and mixed media. The exhibiting artists are: Larry Mills, photography (Northern California); Tanner Goldbeck AKA Racecar 13 - painting, photography, automobile (Baltimore); J.Shea - sculpture, mixed media, assemblage (Boston); Vanae Rivera - painting, silkscreen, textile (Salt Lake City); Jorge Rivas - painting, mixed media (Mexico City); and Rick Rojas - automobile, engine design (Southern California).
The Haley Collective was formed in Santa Barbara, a sleepy Californian central coastal town, in 1996 as its members were drawn there for commercial art gigs such as poster design, sneaker design, skate deck graphic design, photo imaging and sign painting. The collective formed to manifest collaboration, dialog, and energy that came in the form of art exhibits, murals, projects, and live paint sessions. They named themselves after the street/industrial area that they lived and worked in at the time. Since then the members have since splintered to other cities but still maintain the collaborative connection by holding several exhibits, events and live paint sessions each year.
The opening reception takes place June 7, 7:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M. at the Scion Installation LA Gallery, 3521 Helms Ave. (at National), Culver City, CA 90232. The show will run until June 28.
